Bike & Hike to Kühkar
The Kühkar is a unique raised moor at the southern end of the Kötschachtal. On a shady hike we cross beautiful larch woods before a magnificent plateau opens up in front of us.
We start in the Kötschachtal at the Hotel Grüner Baum - by mountain bike. On the signposted route to Prossau, you save some time with your bike and reach the first stop - the Prossau Inn - in about 45 minutes. On foot, you should plan twice as much time.
The actual hike begins for us at the Prossau. Directly behind the house we start at Vinzenz Havel Weg in the direction of Kühkar. The first half runs quite steeply through dense spruce forest. Thanks to the shade of the tall trees, this section is pleasant to walk on even in high summer temperatures. With a little luck and leisure you can also find chanterelles and other mushrooms.
Slowly the path becomes flatter and the forest clears. We cross two small streams, where we can quench our thirst. A short, even and slightly downhill passage marks the halves of the path to Kühkar.
In the meantime we discover impressive larches and some old Swiss stone pine trees around us. Maybe you will find some Swiss stone pine cones along the way, with which you can make good-tasting Swiss stone pine schnapps. In autumn, the larches are brightly orange in colour, creating a special atmosphere.
Soon a signpost shows the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park and shortly after we reach our destination - the Kühkar. An impressive view opens up onto the plateau with the Keesnickelkopf in the middle.
We'll find a dry resting place in the high moor. At the river we enjoy our snack and refresh ourselves in the cool water. Also some horses graze here and provide an almost perfect mountain idyll at 1800 meters above sea level.
